Retreat, spa package, wellness programme: the difference

Three words used almost interchangeably in marketing, and describing three different things in practice. What separates them is structure, not quality.

Three structures, not three tiers

None of these is a better version of the others. They are different shapes, and the shape determines what you are buying.

A spa package sells a quantity: so many treatments, over so many nights. A retreat sells a shared schedule with a theme and usually a group. A wellness programme sells a sequence — what happens on day three depends on what happened on day one.

How to tell which one you are reading

The daily outline gives it away faster than the name does.

  • A package lists items without days attached
  • A retreat publishes a schedule that is the same for everyone
  • A programme publishes a sequence, and often an assessment at the start
  • A package prices per treatment; a programme prices the whole
  • A retreat usually has fixed dates; a programme usually does not
